NYC hotels offer free rooms to government workers

The hotel industry is stepping up during the longest government shutdown in history

(NEW YORK, NY) As the government shutdown passes the one month mark, the hotel industry is stepping up and offering furloughed government workers free rooms if needed.

The Hotel Association has announced that free rooms will be provided to federal workers who need to travel to New York City for personal emergencies during the shutdown.

“As a leading hospitality voice for New York City, we don’t want to see anyone who needs to be here turned away because of financial hardships created by the government shutdown,” said Vijay Dandapani, president/CEO of the Hotel Association of New York City.

Those in need of a free hotel room are asked to email sandy@hanyc.org explaining their circumstances with the subject “GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN ROOM APPLICATION.”

It’s not just hotels, organizations around the country are coming together to help federal workers.

A church in Alabama spent $16,500 on groceries for federal workers, in less than an hour they were gone. According to reports nearly 40,000 federal employees in Alabama have gone without a paycheck for over a month.

Other local businesses across the country have come together to offer discounts on things such as haircuts and meals.
